The varnishing process brings back the original depth and vibrancy of oil colours.

Yabusame is a traditional Japanese archery performed while riding a horse; when not performed in battle, the art was also practised at Shinto shrines as a form of worship or asking deities for good fortune.

Traditionally a guarded male preserve, women in Japan now excel at this art.

Before starting the final oil painting, each work begins with preparatory drawings and charcoal sketches to refine the idea and examine the composition and lighting. They are an essential part of the process; throughout the painting process, they surround the easel.

Charcoal is a fabulously simple medium: burnt wood, an eraser, and a finger for blending. Adding and subtracting in broad passages. Never precious.
